Kitakami Tenshochi Park is a Park stretching along the east shore of Kitakami River in Iwate prefecture. 10,000 cherry blossom (Sakura) trees and 100,000 azaleas are planted at this site. More than 2 km line-up of cherry blossom trees blooms from mid-April to early May and “Kitakami Tenshochi Sakura Festival” is held during the season. Cherry blossoms in Kitakami Tenshochi has been chosen as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites”. It is also referred to as “Tohoku Top 3 Cherry Blossom Viewing Sites” along with Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture, and Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture.
The park is located in walking distance from Kitakami station on JR Tohoku Shinkansen. From Tokyo station, it takes 2.5 – 3 hours.
Kitakami Tenshochi Park is reached by a 30 minute walk. Boats also operate between both sides of Kitakami river during the festival period.
Compared to Tokyo and other areas, the peak season of cherry blossom in Kitakami is later. While it is a bit far from Tokyo or Kyoto, Kitakami is close to Hiraizumi (Hiraizumi: Chusonji temple and Motsuji Temple). If you have a chance to visit Tohoku area in late April, Kitakami Tenshochi Park is a very good option to see cherry blossoms, together with Hirosaki and kakunodate.
